Get ready. Get set. RUN. (But don't forget to hydrate first!)

Sprint, hop, walk, skip. However you get there, get to the third annual Stars & Stripes 5K benefiting Ready Shelby this Thursday, July 3. The race kicks off at 7p.m. at Liberty Bowl Stadium on Tiger Lane and winds through a scenic route through Midtown. 

Come out to show your support for our emergency first responders. Stay for the post-race celebration on Tiger Lane featuring live music, free beer, sodas and water, hot dogs, hamburgers and a fireworks display.

Stay Cool on Race Day and All Summer

Now that summer has officially begun, it’s important to remember that extreme heat can make some of our favorite outdoor activities riskier. Heat stroke, dehydration and other heat disorders can be deadly. Here are a few tips to prepare for the heat on race day and all summer long:

  • Wear cool, loose-fitting clothing that is light-colored to reflect heat and sunlight. Consider wearing a visor or large-brimmed hat to protect your head and face.
  • Drink plenty of water. Remember to always pack enough of it when you’re out biking, walking, running or enjoying any outdoor activity.
  • Wear plenty of sunscreen with a high SPF rating.
  • If, at any time, you become light-headed, confused, weak or faint, STOP all activity and get into a cool or shaded area. Notify 9-1-1 immediately if you believe a family member is overheated. Monitor his or her body temperature while you wait for help.  (No worries: We’ll have medics on-site at the Stars & Stripes 5K.)
